Stream Stomp 2011
The Clinton County Rivers, Lakes, and Streams Cleanup
Mark your calendars for July 9th, 2011.
STREAM STOMP Announces Partnership with Living Lands & Waters for 2011
Organizers of Stream Stomp 2011 have announced an exciting new partnership for 2011. Volunteers from Stream Stomp will work in conjunction with volunteers from Living Lands & Waters, as part of their 2nd annual Great Mississippi River Cleanup from St. Paul, MN to St. Louis, MO. The new partnership will also push back the date of Stream Stomp 2011 to July 9, 2011.

Living Lands & Waters is an East Moline based non-profit environmental organization established by Chad Pregracke in 1998. This nationally recognized group has removed 6.5 million pounds of debris through 500 community-based river clean ups along the Midwest’s mightiest rivers. Last year’s Great Mississippi River Cleanup culminated in 1,177 volunteers in 23 cities rolling up their sleeves to remove 62 tons of debris along the Upper Mississippi. Volunteers from Living Lands & Waters will spend part the day on July 9th removing trash and debris from the Mississippi River bordering Clinton.
Some of Stream Stomp’s volunteers will work along side of Living Lands & Waters in the July 9th event by cleaning up the shoreline of the Mississippi in Clinton. Another group of Stream Stomp volunteers will tackle a clean up project in Wapsipinicon River Watershed area, east of Wheatland.
“We are so jazzed to be joining forces with Living Lands & Waters on July 9th to combine our Clinton County based Stream Stomp event and The Great Mississippi River Cleanup,” said 2011 Stream Stomp Chair Melisa Jacobsen. “What better way to encourage and support stewardship of our local waters - giving good folks the opportunity, supplies, and support to care for and clean up our local waterways and have some fun doing it!”
The purpose of the Stream Stomp is to organize and carry out a clean up of portions of the rivers, lakes, and streams which flow through Clinton County. Any materials that can be recovered from targeted waterways will be recycled, if possible.
Stream Stomp hopes to build on the success of last year’s event. Over 80 volunteers took part in the first ever Stream Stomp event on June 5th, 2010. Volunteers cleaned up 6,610 lbs. (over 3.3 tons) of garbage and debris along the Mississippi River in Clinton and along Silver Creek in Westbrook Park in DeWitt.
Anybody with an interest in improving the water quality of Clinton County’s rivers, lakes, and streams are encouraged to participate in organizing and carrying out the 2011 event. Stream Stomp is also seeking potential businesses which might be interested in donating to help facilitate this year’s event. Any amount of donation is welcome and encouraged.
Anybody with questions, comments, or an interest in participating in Stream Stomp is encouraged to contact Brad Seward at the Clinton County Area Solid Waste Agency via phone at 563-243-4749, extension 101, or via e-mail at ccaswa@gmtel.net. More information will also become available at www.streamstomp.org in the near future. Also look for the Stream Stomp 2011 group on Facebook.
We thank everyone for all the great help last year and encourage you to join us once again in 2011!
