A Bit of History...
Late in 2009, a few citizens from Clinton County were sure
of one thing. They wanted to bring a waterway cleanup to their county. They had no idea who could or would
handle such a big task. After some
searching, Clinton County Area Solid Waste Agency agreed to invite the public
and host a meeting for anyone interested in such a cleanup.
Several area groups, businesses, and individuals came together to make a difference in the water quality of the rivers, lakes, and streams in Clinton County, Iowa. Because of this great cooperative effort, the first county waterway cleanup event of this large a scope came to be.
The event was dubbed “Stream Stomp” and an early summer date of June 5, 2010 was set. It was decided to start small, selecting five sites across the county including areas in or near Clinton, DeWitt, and Calamus. Another important decision was to recycle as much as possible from the refuse removed from the waterways.
The committee now includes Clinton County Area Solid Waste Agency, Clinton County Conservation Board and volunteers from various businesses, groups, and organizations, including DM Services, Custom Pak, Lower Wapsipinicon River Cleanup Project, and Behr Metal Recycling. The committee plans to continue their efforts to create a yearly event in Clinton County. It is hoped that the event will continue to expand to more waterway areas as the volunteer base and interest grows.
